This unique fireplace surround is set in a corner location with river stones of varying magnitude. A raised sandstone hearth follows a wide curve in the forefront and supports a wood burning stove. Four corbel stones, of local granite, shoulder a sandstone mantel and the overlying stone.
The stone for the fireplace surround is laid in a dynamic arrangement with dry pack joints that conceal the mortar. This creates a background reminiscent of the rugged and varied patterns within nature.
Above the mantel, relief carvings of swimming salmon are set amidst an erratic mix of smaller stones. A school of bait fish, close by, suggests that the salmon are feeding. Below the mantel, another water flow is shaped with smaller stones. And at the base of the raised hearth, a further band of small stones extends over the floor. This maintains the theme of water flow while cleverly providing the required fireplace clearance for the wood burning stove. Above the band of stones on the floor, shells are evident on the vertical face of the raised hearth.
Spot lights, set in the ceiling and on the underside of the mantel, highlight the details within the stonework. Sculptures, placed on the hearth, reflect the theme of salmon and enhance the dramatic texture of this fireplace.
